random happy things

* My parents celebrated Snicker's birthday the other day. He's 2 years old now! (Or is it in dog years like 14 or so?) My mom gave him good food to eat - a little bit of hamburger with rice. No dry food that day for him. What a spoiled little doggie!

* I rarely go on you tube but when I do, I glance at their featured stuff and came across the infomercial for the Weezer Snuggie. Go look it up. Yes, I'm talking to you. ;)

* My new job starts tomorrow! I'm glad that I start on a Friday. I'm nervous about the clients and what they'll be like. I'm grateful that the hours are good and that I have this whole day to relax and do as much crafting fun things as I can before tomorrow comes.

* I got my first pedicure this past weekend at Syche's party. I was terribly ticklish and felt bad for the lady who's touching my feet as she was surprised. Thankfully, she laughed and if she was annoyed, she hid it pretty well.

* It still makes me happy every time I get a text from D. I love how he always texts with correct punctuation. ;)

* The chai tea mix at Trader Joe's is pretty decent. I think mixes never taste as good as the real stuff (it's powder after all) but this is surprisingly yummy.

* Eat Pray Love is a disappointment so far. Well, I think I knew that after the introduction when she clearly says that she's not a Christian because she doesn't believe that Jesus is the only way. The anecdotes and funny stories are good, but not great.

* Yay Ann! Glad you're back in CA for a little while. ;)

thoughts - general life edition

* House church has been such a blessing. I do miss Sunset Ministry at times and want to visit more, but I see how meeting in this way has really challenged me to not just show up at church and expect things but to bring something to give. It's also been nice to sleep in on Sunday mornings. :)

* I'm 99% on my way to getting a new job! I applied to SVS in South San Francisco and will be working with people with disabilities. It includes picking clients up and driving them to the center, direct care with everything from hygiene to enriching their lives with the different resources at the center (a music room, an exercise room, etc.) and then driving them home. I think knowing sign language is what got me the job. ;) It's 99% so far since I just got fingerprinted and now need to prove I don't have TB and then get a DMV printout or something to show I'm a safe driver.

* I have either or both a slipped disc and a pinched nerve in my lower back. No pain at all for me, which I'm super thankful for. But my left leg has been a little numb for the past few days. My doctor has given me a list of back exercises to do, recommended taking a multi-vitamin and a calcium+vitamin D combo. She says to do the exercises and take the pills everyday for 6 weeks and then see her again. It freaked me out at first, but I really thank God that things haven't gotten worse and I'm still pain-free and can walk ok and have strength in my leg, which isn't the case with other people who have gone through something similar.

*This will be the first Halloween in a long time that I'm actually dressing up. Bachelorette (sp?) weekend for Syche in Reno. I'm looking forward to the hanging out, but still not so sure about the dressing up part ...

* We found a photographer!!! We loved his engagement shots of us and are happy to have one more thing checked off the to-do list. :)

books galore!

Today at work, there were a TON of books in the great hall. My co-worker was a little late coming back from her lunch break and had an armload of books with her. She said something about how people donated them and wanted to get rid of them and they were free to take with a small donation. After her break, she had a whole box of books!

I made my way over after I clocked out and as it turns out, by the end of the day, they were just free! And no one was in the room watching over them. My boss encouraged me to take some because otherwise they would just be donated somewhere else.

I walked on over and my eyes just lit up. It was so awesome to be there by myself and wander around. It was sooooo glorious! So many books! Hundreds were just laid out and ready to find a new home. Some new, some worn. Divided roughly into sections like children and self-help and mysteries. I didn't know where to start. I picked up around 4 or 5 and then found a box and put them in to the side so I wouldn't have to carry them as I search. I kept going and picked some up and then put some back and calculated what was worth carrying to my car and what wasn't worth the weight.

In the end, I got 24 books. :)

I went home and shared with my mom this awesome experience and she browsed through the titles and decided to take 4 for herself to read. So unfortunately, this list will only be 21 books, as I can only remember 1 of the 4 she took.

21. A Year Without Made in China - I read an article about this and always wanted to read it. It's basically a true story of a family trying to live normally - as the title suggests - for a year without any products made in China.

20. The Dreyfuss Affair - I remember taking a French history class in college and I really don't remember a whole lot about this except that J'accuse is super important and Emile Zola is genius.

19. Flags Of Our Fathers - It's a history book. I like history.

18. The World is Flat - I LOVE Friedman. It's been a long time since I've read him, and I'll probably need a dictionary to read it and understand it all, but I'm super excited.

17. Roots - I've never read this before, only seen the series on video when I was in 5th grade. Figured maybe D could use this for his history class or something. I just remember crying whenever we watched this because it's just so revealing about slavery.

16. The Lovely Bones - This is the only book that I picked up that I have read before. I think I got it from the library the first time around. It'll be nice to have an actual copy to pick up when I want to re-read it.

15. The Heart of a Woman - I know nothing about this book. I just saw that it's written by Maya Angelou. That was good enough for me.

14. Something Borrowed - A girly novel, it looks easy to read and it was clean and new and calling out to me.

13. The Way Life Should Be - see #14

12. Confessions of a Shopaholic - see #14 ... oh and I think this was made into a movie this past year, right? Hopefully that gives it some kind of credibility?

11. How to Be Good - It's by Nick Hornby, who wrote About A Boy, which I did not read but saw the movie. Looks interesting.

10. The House of Sand And Fog - I don't like Oprah but the sticker was on the cover so it must be decent.

9. Their Eyes Were Watching God - I think this was made into a tv movie ... and again, may have some Oprah connection.

8. Happiness Sold Separately - This is by Lolly Winston, who wrote this other novel I read called Good Grief, which was really good. It was an easy read and actually made me cry. I think I might have blogged about this long ago when I happened to read another book about death and grief around the same time.

7. Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood - Never saw the movie, just interested in the book anyways.

6. No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency - I think this was made into a tv show? I think I read an article about it and just remembered the title and picked it up.

5. The Sound and the Fury - It's some kind of classic. No idea what it's about. Didn't even look at the back cover. Totally obivious to it. Hope I'll actually read this and not just own it.

4. ... hmm ... can't remember the title - but I know it's by Amy Tan ... it's not Joy Luck ...

3. Martha Stewart cookbook - This was the first one I saw and picked up. It's older and without photos and was a little dusty on top and was heavier than the other books, but I'm still so happy to have it!

2. ... hmm ... some Charlie Brown book .. it's the Christmas one ... I immediately thought of Kim since she likes Peanuts, this one's for her

1. Eat Pray Love - I always wanted to read this. Traveling, eating, spirituality and discovering new things - what's not to love?

Hope I actually get to read through all of these someday. :)

Random thoughts (wedding planning edition)

* After coming back from visiting our site today, I think I'm actually tired of wedding planning ... for now. :) Actually, honestly, I love planning and making lists and researching the things I ... um - I mean, WE, want. :) But today, I blame this tired feeling on traffic, both getting there and coming home. No accident or anything. Just people on the bridge stop and look at the new construction and slow everyone else down. O dear.

* I signed us up for The Knot because they have a checklist and other fun tools. It's fun signing in to our account and checking how it says we have 290 days to go! With the exclamation point too, because if they didn't put that on there I wouldn't be as excited.

* Engagement photos this Saturday. A friend of ours gave us a fair warning that because (we think) he's Russian, he might be not the nicest person since the lady photographer she had for her wedding was Russian and she was mean. He seems nice so far. *fingers crossed*

* Google Docs has become a great friend of mine. Couldn't plan anything without the help of Google Docs. Yay.

* I have my shoes. They're flats, not heels, which I am super excited about. Debating about whether or not I should walk around in them anyways and "break them in"

* For honeymooning, I think our main debacle is about deciding on going to a familiar place (like Disneyland! or San Diego!) and saving some $ OR going to somewhere more nice and fancy and spending a little more ... what to do ...

* No more magazines. How is it possible that it's still like 10 months away and I'm sooo done with wedding magazines? Because they just have ads and ads and more ads and not much good advice. Anyone want mine?

* I know this isn't really about planning but I'm watching the Giants/Diamondbacks game right now and the camera showed a couple who just got engaged and one of the commentators was like "Just once, I'd like to see someone say 'no'  ... like maybe they look at the ring and say 'that's not big enough' " lol.

* I don't know yet what to give people for thank you gifts (all you people who read this may very well be helping out in some way). I think Jen and Kim and Joanna got bath salts or lotion or something last weekend for Tony and Kathy's wedding ... what about guy helpers? The Knot and wedding websites have lame gifts like monogrammed ties or cuff links or something, but I don't think our guy friends want that .. or do you?

* I love you Dale ^_^ So happy to spend my life with you.

if I were an insect,

I would be a bee.

* These next two weeks are crazy busy. Bzz. Bzz. No time. No time for emails. My cell phone will be out of range in the latter week. Must finish all my camp prep today! Tonight is busy. Tomorrow is busy with work and saying bye to a friend going to grad school in Seattle. Sunday I'm in for a long car ride to San Diego to finally meet all these wonderful people at City of Refuge and Dale says I should prepare myself for many many hugs because I guess they like to hug. Like Danny Tanner. Then Disney on Wednesday! Coming back Thursday and then quickly laundry-ing and then packing for youth camp. Gone til the next Saturday. Then I can breathe for a bit. Then the job hunt continues and maybe another class this semester. ASL 4 already?!

* The wedding bee website is soooo cute. I want to make everything now - my own bouquets, aisle decor, center pieces, table cards, favors, etc.

* Dale got me the Zee Avi album and it's so good. There's this song called "Honey Bee" and it's my favorite. She's singing about being a honey bee cut off from her colony and how she had to rescue her love so he could join her. I told Dale I would save him even if it means I'd have to face the queen.

* I really want some toast with peanut butter and drizzled honey now ...
